A foundation stone is the first stone laid in a building and forms the base on which the building rests. In Grondsteen, we approach artefacts as the foundation stones of society.
These objects tell stories about extinct organisms and offer a view of the lives of our ancestors. The image we develop on the basis of artefacts, however, is never complete and will always be colored by the perspective of the present.
The artists in Grondsteen take this perspective into account in their work and explore different approaches to and meanings of foundation stones. They view raw materials and archaeological objects as carriers of untold stories. By deforming objects and searching for alternatives, they shift the perspective on the past and question what archaeologists of the future will find from our present time. In the exhibition, fact and fiction merge, and the visitor is challenged to assign alternative meanings to objects in the surrounding environment.
