Grondsteen recap

It has been a while since I organised the exhibition Grondsteen at Pictura Dordrecht but these photos give a short recap in case you’ve missed it.

A foundation/grondsteen stone is the first stone laid in a building and forms the base on which the building rests. In Grondsteen, we view artefacts as the foundation stones of society.

These objects tell stories about extinct organisms and offer a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. However, the picture we form from artefacts is never complete and will always be coloured by our present-day perspective.
The artists in Grondsteen incorporate this perspective into their work and explore different approaches to and meanings of foundation stones. They view raw materials and archaeological objects as vessels for untold stories. By transforming objects and seeking alternatives, they shift our perspective on the past and question what archaeologists of the future will discover about our present day. In the exhibition, fact and fiction merge, and visitors are challenged to ascribe alternative meanings to objects in their surroundings.

The exhibition took place from the tenth of January until the fifteenth of February this year. The project was supported by Iona Stichting.
